Construction is underway to double the size of the Mount Druitt Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) at Shalvey and deliver more life-changing programs for young people.

Blacktown City Council is delivering the $25.4 million project, funded by the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants (WSIG) program.

The expansion will enable PCYC NSW and the Savannah Pride Basketball Club to help more young people enjoy being active, engaged and pursue personal development.

Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting said the new venue was part of building a better community.

“PCYC NSW and Savannah Pride do amazing work helping young people turn their lives around so that they can create positive relationships and fulfill their potential,” he said.

“Council is backing these successful programs to change even more lives by providing a bigger venue that will offer more opportunity to the young people of Western Sydney.”

The redevelopment will include:

· a new entry with reception and administration area

· a youth hub where young people, parents, carers and families can gather

· 2 new multipurpose indoor courts

· storage for the new courts

· new toilets and amenities

· indoor and outdoor gathering spaces

· car and bus parking

· landscaping and tree planting informed by the Dharug community.

PCYC NSW CEO Michael Silman was excited about the future.

“Today marks an incredibly exciting new chapter for PCYC Mount Druitt and for the young people, families and communities who call this area home,” he said.

“The redevelopment will allow us to build on our strong legacy and to reach even more young people through sport, mentoring, education and youth empowerment programs such as Savannah Pride.

“We are very proud to be part of the next chapter of Mount Druitt’s story and to work alongside Blacktown City Council, the NSW Government, police and our community partners to create a place where more young people can discover what they are capable of and thrive.”

Member for Mount Druitt Edmond Atalla was delighted work was underway.

“This is a fantastic investment in the young people of Mount Druitt and Western Sydney,” he said.

“The expansion of the Mount Druitt PCYC will create more opportunities for young people to get active, build confidence, develop new skills and connect with their community.

“PCYC NSW does an incredible job supporting our local youth and this new facility will allow it to reach even more young people.

“I’m proud to see the NSW Government together with Blacktown City Council, investing in infrastructure that gives our young people the spaces and opportunities they deserve.”

PCYC NSW and the community will be able to continue using the existing building during the works. Construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

Under the WSIG program, several community improvement projects are already complete.

The expanded PCYC is one of seven major projects Council is delivering with funding from the state government.
