Youth unemployment in Australia for those aged 15 to 24 has risen to 10.1%, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than double the average national unemployment rate.

As the end of the financial year approaches, youth charity PCYC NSW is calling on Australians to make a life-changing impact by donating to its youth employability programs, which supported 515 young people facing barriers to employment in 2025.

For every $1 invested in youth charity PCYC NSW, $7.76 is returned to New South Wales in economic, health and social benefits. *

PCYC NSW provides one-on-one career mentorship to school leavers aged 17 to 21, supporting them to form real connections with employers through its 12-month Stepping Up program.

18-year-old participant Majok Lual found stable employment and financial security after years of uncertainty moving between casual jobs.

“The opportunities I got through PCYC employability programs have changed the trajectory of my life,” said Majok.

“PCYC put me on the right path and gave me my start in construction. I’m now working towards becoming a Construction Manager. I wouldn’t be here today without my involvement in Stepping Up.”

A tax-deductible donation of more than $2 will help ensure vital youth employability programs remain accessible to those who need them most. One donation gives employment, security, and belonging.

General Manager Fundraising and Marketing, Bree Godden said PCYC NSW youth programs remain free to vulnerable and disadvantaged youth thanks to the generosity of donors, corporate and grant partners.

“Gaining meaningful employment helps young people contribute to stronger communities and even support their families, sometimes their pay cheque is the reason food is on their family table,” said Bree.

“Your donation empowers the next generation to build brighter futures they can be proud of, while also providing you with a tax benefit before June 30. Every gift removes a barrier for a young person who wants to work but doesn’t know how to get there, they just need the opportunity.”

For years, 18-year-old Avehry Pesamino has dreamed of becoming a qualified chef. It’s an industry she never thought possible, until she was referred to PCYC.

“Employability programs gave me the confidence and interview skills to secure work experience at a local restaurant, which turned into a chef apprenticeship. I am now excited for my future after years of feeling lost. ” Said Avehry.

PCYC NSW also delivers Fit for Work, a 10-week program designed for young people aged under 18 who are disengaged from work or education. In partnership with NSW Police and industry leaders, participants are equipped with essential workplace and life skills, including First Aid and White Card certifications. In 2025, 83% of participants re-engaged with school or gained employment.
