Twin Brothers Find Their Path Through PCYC
Amber Griffin
PCYC is a hub of opportunity where staff see potential in young people, advocate for them, and help open doors they may never have known existed. One opportunity often leads to another, creating a domino effect that can positively shape a young person’s future.
Twin brothers Jonah and Jayden started volunteering at PCYC Mount Druitt in 2023 at 16-years old, running activities and providing a safe space for young people aged 10 to 18 on Friday nights as part of the Unites program.
Jonah and Jayden developed a sense of belonging and discovered their capability through their connection with PCYC, leading them to join the 12-month Stepping Up employability program.
“I didn’t see myself going to University, Stepping Up helped me find my path in life by showing me firsthand what working full-time is like to prepare me for my future career,” said Jayden, who secured a job as an Airport Security Officer.
“I carry the skills I learnt through the program into my job every day, I get along well with the team and really enjoy it, I wouldn’t have this confidence if I didn’t participate in Stepping Up. I still connect with the PCYC staff today, working with them on my career goals. I know I’ll have that support for the rest of my life.”
Stepping Up helped Jonah find his passion for supporting young people, like PCYC did for him. Now aged 19, he has gained full-time employment at his local PCYC club as an Activities Officer.
“What I enjoy most is seeing the young people smile, making connections with them and helping them step outside their comfort zones and reach their potential.”
“When I first joined the Stepping Up program, I thought it was just a chance to get out of class. But I ended up finding it really beneficial, it taught me how to interview and apply for jobs and gave me the qualifications I needed to be ready for work. PCYC gave me the opportunity to make connections, build confidence and work towards a career helping young people. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work at PCYC Mount Druitt and give something back.”
Club Manager Jasper Villasana takes pride in mentoring local youth and has supported the brothers throughout their journey with PCYC Mount Druitt.
“When I first met Jonah, he was really shy. Seeing him now support other young people in finding their purpose is proof of the ripple effect that happens when young people are given the right opportunities and encouragement,” said Jasper.
Jonah and Jayden have also been involved in culture and community program, Nations of Origin, and leadership program, Blue Star, volunteering to mentor other young people on a similar trajectory.
“I want other young people to know that there are always people at PCYC willing to help you follow your dreams. I wouldn’t have had a clear path in life if it weren’t their support,” said Jayden.
