The Inclusive Friday Tradition Changing Lives at PCYC Bateau Bay

For many people living with disabilities, finding safe, welcoming spaces to connect with others and participate in community activities can make a meaningful difference to their wellbeing and confidence.

Every Friday, PCYC Bateau Bay opens its basketball courts to a group from Life Without Barriers, transforming the space into a dedicated environment where participants can come together, build friendships and enjoy pickleball, basketball and kickball in a supportive setting.

One participant said, “I like interacting with all the staff every week, I always look forward to Fridays to see my friends at the club. I feel healthier and more fit since I started.”

PCYC Bateau Bay Club Manager Stacey Chant said, “What began as a simple opportunity to provide the group with access to local facilities has become a weekly highlight for our team. Participants look forward to the regular catch-up, where they can stay active and engage with their community in a space that is safe and inclusive.”

Through partnerships like this, PCYC Bateau Bay and Life Without Barriers are ensuring people of all abilities have opportunities to participate, belong and thrive.

Life Without Barriers Disability Support Worker Tiffany Limn said, “It’s rewarding watching the participants come out of their shell, PCYC is a safe space for them where they can get their bodies moving.”

“One participant is non-verbal and initially wouldn’t even make eye contact. Since coming to PCYC, he now greets all the staff and is the most enthusiastic person in the room,” said Tiffany.

“Another participant has lost 31 kilograms since he started with PCYC 14 months ago and is living a much healthier lifestyle thanks to the encouragement of staff. I genuinely credit this program for that result.”
