Youth charity PCYC NSW and FosterCare Sports are working together to remove financial barriers that may otherwise prevent children in care from getting involved in sport.

Through the partnership, 22 young people are participating in activities free of charge across PCYC clubs in Hawkesbury, Blacktown, Sutherland, Tamworth, Lismore, Albury and Lake Illawarra.

Participation is made possible through a combination of grant funding and local partnerships with organisations including Rotary, the Lions Clubs and the Department of Communities and Justice.

PCYC NSW State Business Development Manager Jacquelyn Hook said the partnership reflected both organisations’ commitment to giving every child a fair opportunity to participate.

“PCYC NSW and FosterCare Sports share a vision that no child should miss out on the life-changing benefits of sport and recreation because of their circumstances. Together, we’re creating opportunities for children in care to build confidence and form meaningful connections.”

Foster carer Amanda said the support has made a significant difference.

“We are so thankful to FosterCare Sports and PCYC for supporting our 10-year-old foster child’s gymnastics program. Her confidence and enthusiasm has grown throughout the term, and she loves showing and telling everyone she knows what she has learnt.”

FosterCare Sports Founder and Director Margaret Armstrong said sport could provide routine and a real sense of belonging at a time when so much else in the lives of children in care may be changing.

“PCYC has been instrumental in helping 22 children across NSW access these opportunities, including directly funding eight children who may otherwise have missed out because of financial constraints. We’re incredibly grateful to PCYC for working alongside us to remove barriers and give more children in care the chance to be part of a team.”
