First Nations artwork by Armidale youth earns publication and University invitation

Young people at PCYC Outside Of School Hours (OOSH) care at Ben Venue Public School in Armidale have achieved something truly remarkable in celebration of this year’s NAIDOC Week theme ‘50 Years of Deadly’.
Titled ‘Our Stories In Colour’, the group has created a 43-page colouring-in book showcasing their First Nations cultural expression and creativity, inspired by Aboriginal art and crafted on Anaiwan country over several weeks.
It has since been reviewed by Aunty Larissa, an Aboriginal artist and staff member at Oorala Aboriginal Centre at the University of New England (UNE), and Aunty Sam, Director of Oorala and a parent at the OOSH service. Both were deeply moved by the project and have approved the book for publication and printing by UNE, enabling it to be shared with the wider community.
OOSH Coordinator Kylie Shirdon said, “This all began as a simple idea to celebrate First Nations culture and awareness, it’s turned into something incredibly meaningful for all. Seeing the children feel proud of themselves, their learning and their artwork has been the most rewarding part.”
“Oorala have expressed a strong interest in future collaborations with PCYC OOSH, including involving our young people in developing illustrations for upcoming cultural education books.”
Adding to this incredible achievement, the young people at Ben Venue have been personally invited to submit a design for the UNE Oorala 2027 staff uniform. Traditionally, this opportunity is offered through a school competition, making the invitation a significant honour. If selected through community voting, the children’s artwork will become the official 2027 uniform design.
This accomplishment reflects the creativity and talent of PCYC young people, while also demonstrating the strength and possibilities of genuine community partnerships. It is a proud moment for the students, the OOSH service, and PCYC NSW, highlighting the meaningful engagement and positive impact we strive to create in the communities we serve.
