“We’re the heart of this community now and into the future.”
For more than eight decades, PCYC NSW has been changing lives in the Hunter region. PCYC Newcastle was the first of nine clubs established in the Hunter – 86 years later, it has more than 2,100 members and counting.
Club Manager, Hollie Cressy said, “PCYC Newcastle is an integral part of the local community, not only delivering sport, recreation and fitness, but also running vital youth programs in partnership with NSW Police that support young people facing social challenges.
“We’re the heart of this community now and into the future.”
A group of local young people aged 15 to 17 have recently graduated from PCYC employability program, Job Ready. It’s a four-day course where students develop essential employability skills, and participate in resume writing, interviewing, and career-mapping workshops. Participants also get the opportunity to obtain their White Card and First Aid certificate.
Graduate, Max Tenbohmer said “PCYC has definitely changed my life for the better, it’s given me a number of new skills and certifications that have helped me find employment in a trade.”
“I have developed lasting relationships with staff and Police, and I know that PCYC Newcastle is a community I can always come to for support.”
Fit for Life is one of the most popular youth programs at PCYC Newcastle with more than 420 attendances in the year to date. It’s designed to get 10 to 16-year-olds active in life through before school fitness and mentorship. The PCYC program is unique in the way it works to reduce and prevent antisocial behaviour, and is offered at every PCYC club across New South Wales.
“Having a PCYC club in Newcastle is vital because it provides a safe, welcoming space where young people, families and the wider community can connect, grow and stay active.”
The club also works to transform lives through activities like gymnastics, gym and fitness, and boxing, with many locals finding a place to belong in PCYC.
The money generated from these offerings support PCYC’s mission work, allowing more young people to benefit from free youth programs like Job Ready, and Fit for Life.
