Hit the basketball court at PCYC for good health

Hit the basketball court at PCYC for good health

Basketball is one of the fastest growing and most popular sports in the world. It’s also one of the most popular sports played at PCYC NSW clubs across the state.

PCYC NSW members spend hours on our courts playing one-on-one with friends or signing up as a team to play organised community sports.

When you consider all the health and social benefits of playing basketball, it’s easy to see why this court sport is such a popular pastime.

Basketball is great for a healthy heart!

Playing basketball is a great cardio workout. All the running, dribbling, shooting and jumping keeps your heart fit and your reflexes sharp. At the same time, you are building endurance and building up your muscles.

Basketball is a great way to burn lots of calories.

Playing just one hour of basketball can burn 630–750 calories. Add to that improve balance and coordination, and developing concentration and self-discipline, and you the physical benefits of basketball are easy to see. Remember, a hard workout means you need to make sure you have plenty of fluids at hand so you can rehydrate regularly.

As well as being a great way to stay fit, basketball can also:

  •     help you to make new friends and teach you about being a good team player
  •     be played by people of all ages and all abilities
  •     be played all year round because at most places, including PCYC NSW clubs, it is played on an indoor court
  •     be practiced alone – all you need is a ball, good sports shoes, a bottle of water, and a hoop
  •     be played and enjoyed with as few as two people (although official games require 10 players)

Check with your local PCYC NSW club to see when you can book some court time. Or sign up to join a local team and take part in a regular community competition.
