Olympic boxer and PCYC member, Harry Garside reflects on his connection to the youth charity

You may recognise Harry Garside as a star in the ring, the first Australian boxer to win an Olympic medal since 1988 – but behind the scenes the Bondi Beach local is a PCYC NSW member and long-time supporter.

It’s the boxing gym at PCYC Eastern Suburbs where Harry refines his striking and blocking skills, first joining in 2021. “I’ve been here ever since and I love it, it feels like my family away from family.” said Harry.

Four years later, between major bouts and international appearances, the 27-year-old is still regularly training at the PCYC Club… building a close relationship with the youth charity’s volunteers and employees, who are dedicated to helping members reach their full potential.

“The culture is the best, it’s what keeps me coming back, there’s heaps of young people who are passionate and striving for good things in the sport, and in life – we’re all here trying to do better for ourselves.”

PCYC has more than 88,000 members across New South Wales, 65 per cent are under the age of 18, all participating in a range of life-changing Youth Programs, and sport and recreation.

“My whole entire life I’ve seen boxing change lives, and I know PCYC is amazing for that, it’s amazing to see how much impact the programs have on so many young people, helping them find direction in life.” said Harry.

“Some of the kids I meet at the gym have challenging home lives, and they come to the PCYC Club for safety and solace, they’ve always got support here.”

When asked what advice he would give to young people working towards a goal or dream, Harry said…

“Enjoy the process of it and shoot really high, when I started boxing at the age of 9 I never thought I’d go to the Olympics, but your goals can evolve over time – set your sights on something that seems unachievable now and strive towards it.”
