NEW- Empowering Young People – the new vision of PCYC

The future direction of the state’s largest youth organisation was mapped out at the PCYC NSW annual conference on June 2.

More than 300 police and civilian representatives from Police Citizens Youth Clubs from around NSW gathered at Sydney’s Novotel Olympic Park.

CEO Dominic Teakle said, in its 80th year, the PCYC board had approved Empowering Young People, a new five-year strategy for the organisation, which is a unique partnership between the community and the NSW Police Force.

“Over the next five-year period, Empowering Young People will lay the foundation for the partnership with police and community across our network of more than 64 clubs,” he said.

“We will continue to provide a safe environment for youth, have programs and activities that reduce youth crime and engage young people in the community, engage with youth on their terms and deliver programs that achieve our mission in an ethical, environmental and commercially sustainable way.”

Mr Teakle said initiatives would be announced to strengthen club community committees and community engagement, appoint a formal youth committee which would directly report to the PCYC board and new board structures which would strengthen the youth organisation’s governance and ability to reach all young people in NSW.

“Our strategic direction will be about continuing to expand our mission in the area of crime prevention and ensure that ‘getting young people active in life’ means more than just physical health but also mental health, life skills, cultural development and expanding services to the community by giving youth a place to belong.

“Strengthening and expanding our network of community committees to all 64 clubs in NSW will ensure deeper engagement between PCYC and the public.”

The PCYC state conference will conclude with the annual awards presentation and dinner attended by Police Commissioner Mick Fuller and NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Ray Williams.
