PCYC SOUTH SYDNEY MARTIAL ARTS

At PCYC, we’re very proud of our martial arts offering that welcomes all ages and skill levels. Most clubs have some form of martial art on offer, which enables children and adults to come and learn the ancient art of self defense.

Some of the most popular forms of Martial Arts that we offer at PCYC are:

Jujitsu
Jujutsu is a Japanese martial art developed as a method of close combat for defeating an armed and armoured opponent in which one uses no weapon or only a short weapon. “Ju” can be translated to mean “gentle, soft, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding.” “Jutsu” can be translated to mean “art” or “technique” and represents manipulating the opponent’s force against themself rather than confronting it with one’s own force. PCYC provides experienced instructors who are suitably qualified to teach interested people of all ages.

Kickboxing
Kickboxing is a form of martial art which combines boxing with elements of karate, in particular kicking with bare feet. While kickboxing is a contact sport, PCYC maintains the highest standards of safety with experienced instructors and quality facilities and equipment.

Kung fu
In addition to the fighting style, kung fu also includes mental exercises and religious practices designed to balance the whole body. Kung fu is fundamentally about aligning the practitioner with chi, the life force which is believed to move all around us. Shaolin temples resembled universities, integrating a wide range of subjects of study. With experienced and capable instructors, people of all ages are in safe hands in PCYC kung fu programs.

Judo
Judo  is an Olympic-level sport of unarmed combat derived from jujitsu and intended to train the body and mind. It involves using holds and leverage to unbalance the opponent. Judo is a Japanese word meaning “gentle way,” and is a type of martial art that comes from the ancient Japanese martial art of jiu jitsu, meaning “yielding way”. PCYC judo programs are run in accordance with the Australian Judo Federation (JFA), including the accrediting of instructors and grading of participants.

Karate
Karate is a Japanese (Okinawa) system of unarmed combat using the hands and feet to deliver and block blows, widely practised as a sport. Karate may be defined as a weaponless means of self defence. It consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage. PCYC provides experienced and qualified instructors for all of our programs, and offers grading events as a recognition system.

Taekwondo
Taekwondo is an Olympic sport and martial art that uses kicks and punches but no weapons. “Tae” means “foot” or “to strike with the feet”, “kwon” means “hand”, or “to strike with the hand” and “do” means discipline, art, or way. Hence taekwondo (foot-hand-way) means literally “the art of the feet and the hands” or “the art of kicking and punching”. PCYC works with the Taekwondo Federation of Australia to ensure all instructors are appropriately skilled and experienced to deliver a safe and enjoyable program to interested people.

Aikido
A Japanese form of self-defence and martial art that uses locks, holds, throws, and the opponent’s own movements.

Capoeira
A system of physical discipline and movement originating among Brazilian slaves, treated as a martial art and dance form.

Hapkido
Hapkido is a type of Korean martial art which focuses on defence rather than offense, and is designed to neutralise an opponent through a range of techniques. Hapkido is a discipline which is also designed to clarify and calm the spirit, and those who practice hapkido are also attempting to develop themselves as individuals. PCYC offers hapkido programs with highly qualified instructors, with years of experience teaching and perfecting the art form.

Kendo
Kendo is a Japanese form of fencing with two-handed bamboo swords (Shinai) , originally developed as a safe form of sword training for samurai. Kendo, which translates literally to “The Way of the Sword”, is a contemporary Japanese martial art that evolved from the traditions of the samurai. PCYC offers kendo classes with highly trained instructors, and safety equipment of the highest standard.

Ninjitsu
Ninjitsu is part of traditional JuJitsu, the traditional Japanese art of stealth, camouflage, and sabotage, developed in feudal times for espionage and now practised as a martial art. PCYC offers this form of martial arts with skilled instructors within our clubs.

Muay Thai
Muay Thai is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. Because of its roots in heavily Buddhist Thailand, some consider it to have a spiritual aspect, and boxers typically perform some Buddhist rituals before beginning a match. PCYC round Muay Thai classes with experienced instructors within our centres.

Viet Quyen Dao
Viet Quyen Dao is a modern style of unarmed martial arts that combines the various facets of both traditional and contemporary martial arts including karate, judo and kickboxing, resulting in a complete system of unarmed combat. PCYC offers these classes with experienced instructors to interested people.
