MESSAGE FROM BEN HOBBY, CEO PCYC NSW
As we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC Week, this year’s theme — “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy” — invites us to honour the enduring legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while empowering the leaders of tomorrow.
I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather, showing our deepest respect to Elders past and present, for their strength, wisdom, and custodianship. We recognise their profound connection to Country — land, seas and waterways.
The PCYC Nations of Origin Tournament is a powerful reflection of this year’s NAIDOC theme. This event brings together young people from across NSW to celebrate culture and community through sport and mateship. It’s a space where strength is shown through teamwork, vision is nurtured through empowering leadership, and legacy is built through pride in identity.
As CEO of PCYC NSW, I am proud of our continued commitment to supporting all young people. This tournament is more than a sporting event — it’s a testament to what can be achieved when community, PCYC and Police come activate in partnership together, to create opportunities for youth to thrive.
Now in its 11th year, Nations of Origin has grown stronger with each cohort. It is inspiring to see 173 teams and over 1,000 young participants come together across four events – Rugby League, Basketball, Netball and Gymnastics. Their passion and dedication embody the values we hold dear: commitment, resilience, respect, integrity, and community.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to the organising committee led by PCYC GM of Programs & Social Impact, Justine Russell, and PCYC Program Manager, Cassandra Ewens, PCYC Club teams, volunteers, Elders and so many community members. Your tireless efforts make this event a success. We especially acknowledge the enduring partnership with NSW Police, whose ongoing support and collaboration help foster leadership, mentorship and positive pathways for young people.
To our government partners and sponsors – thank you for your unwavering support. Your contributions continue to help us build a legacy that will empower this marvellous rising generation to greater heights.
To all of our young participants – play hard, play fair, and represent your Nation with pride. You will shape a bright future for yourself and for your community as you continue to make the very best decisions.
