The Fairfield/Cabramatta PCYC wrestling squad are out to win and aren’t afraid to show it.
The team, whose youngest member is six years old, brought home eight gold medals at the NSW championships at Sydney University in August qualifying them to compete in the Australian Youth Wrestling Championships.
The Australian championships, which were held in Perth on Sunday, September 20, saw the squad win six gold and two silver medals, an achievement which Fairfield-Cabramatta Club Manager Anthony Cincotta said was unbelievable.
“The squad has made us so proud, and I would say keep an eye of them because mark my words, some of them will be at the 2020 Olympics,” Mr Cincotta said.
“The team have been training for three and a half years at the centre, with most of the boys and girls starting at the age of five.”
“We’re just seeing some amazing talent coming out of Western Sydney.”
The team trains four nights a week, which Mr Cincotta said shows the squad’s commitment to and passion for the sport.
Mr Cincotta said he would welcome any local kids to come along and give the sport a go.
“This is open to anyone out there. If you think you can do it, we’ll get you there.”
