It was a project that aimed to do more than just build restore a go kart.
Police officers from Youth Command who operate out of Campbelltown PCYC in Minto and Break the Cycle Glenquarie Men’s Shed members teamed up with students from the James Meehan High School to restore the vehicle donated by Fast Lane Go Karting, Minto.
The project which took about 10 weeks aimed to ‘‘break down the barriers’’ between local law enforcement and the teenagers.
Senior Constable Amanda Warren hailed the program which also included mentoring and crime prevention workshops was a success.
‘‘One of the kids graduated and has come in his own time to finish the program,’’ she said.
The program also adopted cross-curriculum learning — incorporating subjects including: maths, english and geometry.
Those involved in the program tested the go kart on Wednesday morning on the Fast Lane Go Karting Track.
And yes, the vehicle started.
