PCYC Burwood - Joint Young Achiever Australia Project
Utilising a $16,000 Motorways grant, PCYC Burwood drove an innovative Young Achiever Australia initiative targeting 'at risk' year 10 girls from a local high school. With assistance from Belmore and Bankstown PCYCs, a business skills program was established involving Police Officers and volunteers as mentors. The program aimed to provide practical insights into the operations of a small business.
8 students joined the project, establishing a company - Empiya Enterprises - to produce and market lip gloss, lip balm and body butta in a range of colors and flavors. The students raised capital through the dale of shares, created management structures, produced, marketed and sold their products, and liquidated the company after producing an Annual Report. The company completed its life cycle with a net profit.
At the annual Virgin Mobile Trade Fair, Empiya won best student company in the marketing category. At the annual Young Achievers Australia Awards, Empiya won first prize in the marketing and media category and finished in the top 8 overall out of 360 companies from across Australia. Empiya's marketing director was nominated as Business Person of the Year.
2 students have received certificate II accreditation in business skills management, and another member of the team is looking to make a contribution to PCYC through her local PCYC Club Committee.
